PULSED EDDY CURRENT TECHNOLOGY – NDT

Detect corrosion under insulation (CUI) and fireproofing without costly removal. A Pulsed Eddy Current Technology (PECT) System is a non-contact NDT method designed to measure average wall thickness reduction (corrosion) in ferromagnetic materials, even through thick layers of insulation or cladding. It solves the expensive and dangerous problem of CUI/CUF inspection, providing a rapid screening method to locate and quantify metal loss for asset integrity management. Supplier: Maxwell NDT

Description

Detailed Overview

An advanced NDT instrument utilizing the Pulsed Eddy Current Technology (PECT) technique. This method is specifically designed to measure corrosion and wall thickness loss through thick insulation and coatings without removing them. The system provides a non-intrusive, rapid corrosion assessment solution for insulated pipes and vessels, saving significant cost and time associated with insulation removal.

Measure wall thickness and corrosion on in-service pipes and vessels through thick insulation or weather jacketing.

  • This system uses magnetic pulses to induce Eddy Currents deep into ferromagnetic materials, enabling accurate wall thickness loss measurements from the outside, even without removing insulation, fireproofing, or coatings.
  • It is a critical inspection technique for maintaining oil and gas infrastructure, particularly for detecting the prevalent issue of CUI.
  • The components include the PEC main control unit, a specialized PEC probe, a connecting umbilical, and dedicated data analysis software.

Top Features & Benefits

  • Uses Pulsed Eddy Current Technology (PECT) technology for deep penetration.
  • Ideal for corrosion under insulation (CUI) and Corrosion Under Fireproofing (CUF) inspection.
  • Non-contact measurement through thick non-ferromagnetic layers (e.g., insulation,  aluminium/stainless jacket).
  • Quick and easy screening tool – Fast detection of problem areas
  • Measures remaining average wall thickness.
  • Fast inspection speed and high portability for field work.

Real-World Applications

  • Detection of Corrosion and Wall Loss in ferromagnetic pipelines, vessels, and spheres.
  • Measurement of wall thickness through non-conductive insulation or coatings (e.g., up to 50 mm thick).
  • Inspection of pipelines, storage tanks, and pressure vessels in high-temperature or critical service environments.
  • Used in Oil & Gas, Chemical, and Power industries to reduce downtime and inspection costs.
  • Maritime – Underwater inspections ( through Marine growth ) and Splash Zones

FAQ: Pulsed Eddy Current System – NDT

How does Pulsed Eddy Current Technology (PECT) differ from conventional EC?

PEC uses a pulsed magnetic field instead of a single-frequency alternating current, allowing it to inspect through thick insulation, coatings, or fireproofing to detect corrosion on the underlying carbon steel.

What is the main limitation of PECT?

PEC is generally limited to detecting metal loss (wall thinning) and is less effective at detecting small, isolated cracks compared to conventional high-frequency EC.
