Why is the Cygnus 1 Ex So Unique?

Hazardous Area Inspection Solved

The Cygnus 1 Ex is Intrinsically Safe, certified to Zone 0, suitable for hazardous areas. There are a number of impressive statements we have used to introduce our Cygnus 1 Ex Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge, but what do they all really mean? Let’s demystify these statements and explain the rules and regulations surrounding the use of equipment in hazardous areas.

What are explosive Atmospheres?

The term Ex is recognized globally for explosive atmospheres and the schemes used to prevent explosions.

Hazardous Areas are locations where there is a risk of fire or explosion, due to the presence of ignitable or flammable substances in the air. These substances include gases, vapours, and dusts that are present in the air, at concentrations high enough to produce an ignitable mixture.

NDT Ultrasonic Equipment for Hazardous Areas

As well as being intrinsically safe, the Cygnus 1 Ex is extremely rugged and well suited for use in
harsh environments. Examples of such areas include:

• CHEMICAL PLANTS
• DRY, DUSTY ENVIRONMENTS WHERE IGNITION COULD OCCUR
• FUEL DEPOTS
• GRAIN PROCESSING PLANTS
• INSIDE STORAGE TANKS ON LAND OR AT SEA
• OIL AND GAS PRODUCTION FACILITIES
• MINING
• EXPLOSIVE ATMOSPHERES

Certified Intrinsically Safe For Zone 0 Hazardous Areas

The Cygnus 1 Ex uses the Intrinsically Safe protection to ensure that under both normal uses and with applied fault conditions, no arc or spark can be generated, and no component can heat up enough to cause an explosion. Therefore, the 1 Ex can be safely used in “Zone 0” hazardous area inspection such as oil and gas refineries, mines and fuel depots.

Thickness guage testing in practice

The Cygnus 1 Ex Can Perform Live Testing Safely Within Hazardous Areas Without The Need for a Hot Work Permit or Plant Shutdown.

Don’t Forget, Cygnus 1 Ex can Measure Through Thick Coatings

This heavy-duty device also uses the Cygnus-pioneered Multiple-Echo technique which ignores protective coatings – negating installation the need and time for removing important, expensive coatings or epoxy that safeguard against external or internal corrosion.
Furthermore, Cygnus’ Deep-Coat feature allows the gauge to make the leap from measuring substrates through the standard 3mm (0.12”) coatings, up to 20mm (0.8”) thick coatings.
The Cygnus 1 Ex, like all Cygnus products, is manufactured in the UK and has a 3-year warranty.
