NDT Radiation Metrics Guide

Radioactivity (Activity)

Measures the physical rate at which a radioactive isotope decays (emits radiation) from the source.

  • Ci (Curie): Traditional unit.
  • Bq (Becquerel): SI unit (1 decay per sec).
  • Conversions: 1 Ci = 37 GBq = 0.037 TBq

Biological Equivalent Dose

Measures the biological effect and risk of radiation damage on human tissue. Used for personal dosimetry.

  • Rem (Roentgen Eq. Man): Traditional unit.
  • Sv (Sievert): SI unit.
  • Conversions: 1 Sv = 100 Rem

Absorbed Dose

Measures the physical amount of energy deposited by ionizing radiation into a mass (such as an object or tissue).

  • Rad: Traditional unit.
  • Gy (Gray): SI unit (Joules/kg).
  • Conversions: 1 Gy = 100 Rad

Radiation Exposure

Measures the amount of ionization produced purely in the air by X-rays and gamma rays.

  • R (Roentgen): Traditional unit.
  • C/kg: SI unit (Coulombs per kilogram).
  • Conversions: 1 R = 0.000258 C/kg
