Hardness Scales Guide

Rockwell C (HRC)

Measures indentation hardness using a diamond cone indenter and a heavy load. Commonly used for hard materials like heat-treated steels.

  • Indenter: Diamond cone (Brale).
  • Typical Range: 20 HRC to 70 HRC.
  • Application: Hardened steels, titanium alloys.

Vickers (HV)

Uses a square-based diamond pyramid indenter. Suitable for a very wide range of materials, from very soft to very hard.

  • Indenter: Diamond pyramid.
  • Advantage: One scale covers all hardness ranges.
  • Application: Microhardness testing, ceramics, thin sections.

Brinell (HB / HBW)

Uses a hard steel or carbide ball pushed into the surface under a specific load. Provides a macro-hardness value representing a larger area.

  • Indenter: Tungsten carbide ball (HBW).
  • Advantage: Good for heterogeneous materials (cast iron, forgings).
  • Limitation: Not suitable for very hard materials (usually limits around 650-700 HB).
